IMPACT
Matungu sub-county has a population of 136,000, Yida Garments is located in Koyonzo ward, it serves tailors from four wards with an estimation of the population of seventy thousand, Two thirds of the youth and young women in Koyonzo ward, are unemployed with at least half of them being school dropouts. The community consist of unskilled youths and few trained tailors with few resources like sewing machines and fashionable materials. The target market comprises of more than five hundred schools, welfare societies and hospitals. These are ready market for the business in hospitals/school textile merchandise.
At Yida Garments we are reducing the importation of products that can be acquired locally. Currently we are serving more than three hundred customers on daily basis. We have change the way youth and young women think about self-employment by creating working culture among the youth. The number of new tailoring businesses have increased by 40% due to availability of raw materials. More than 100 young women have been able to employ themselves in tailoring business directly and more than 300 hundred indirectly. Ten youths who have been trained locally are now running their screen printing businesses in different towns creating direct employment for other 10 youths and indirectly for more than 30 youths as sales agents.
10 schools and 3 hospitals in our area, with a population of 10,500 people, have expressed interest in
our products so far. Our goal is to increase the number of schools to 20 by 2022.
